In celebration of the release of the "Kala" Vans we invited some of our friends and fam over to BH Pearlridge. Leroy from TASTE did up some charsiu and prime rib tacos for all in attendance. Matt Gordon from the RVCA ANP just so happened to be in town so he left us with a gift in the form of a painting for the shop. All in all it was a good time as usual. Good ol'Yamasat has been back in town for the past week for some much needed r&r. He and Dyson have been out terrorizing the beaches in search of surf all week. On Saturday we headed over to Steve's for Nick's "Bi-Annual BBQ Sesh" because he was leaving back to Long Beach on Sunday. As usual everything was centered around the bbq and beverages...at least it was for me. There was some skateboarding going down but only a little bit.

You may have witnessed a specific triangle trilock pattern in many of our designs and wondered what it represents. It’s history runs deep in Polynesian culture. The actual trlock pattern symbolized shark’s teeth as many Hawaiians revered sharks as their ‘aumakua, or family deities, whom assume the shape of a shark. In a more modern twist, we use the symbol as unity and strength. We’ve teamed up with 84 Skate to create a graphic t-shirt and custom Spitfire wheel that utilizes this iconic logo in support of local skateboarding. We’ve flipped this into a circular tribal pattern which can be seen in both the Spitfire wheel and t-shirt.

Saturday was a day of recovery for all that was at Dyson's house the night before. It was also Nick's last day in town after being here a whole week and a half. Every year when he comes home for the holidays he always has a bbq at Cholo's bowl. So this is the one time a year that we gather up the crew and head over for some beers, bowls, and bbq's. Steve was kind enough to have Nick and his entourage over for a sesh and it was definitley a good time. T-Roy manned the grill while the rest of the crew either lurked or skated. Young Lionel had his first taste of this bowl and he absolutely destroyed it. This was Jeff and Damon's first time and they were wondering why this was the first time they've ever been there. Kyle, Bo, Nick, T-Roy, Emil, Marsh, and Darren did what they do best.....suck em up and talk story! Oh wait actually that was me. Those dudes were so focused in on ripping that I had to hold down the story talking and keeping the beverages cold!

Volcom Skate Team @ Blue Hawaii Surf Pearlridge

Once again only weeks after opening our doors at Blue Hawaii Surf Pearlridge we have special visitors. This time it was the Volcom Skate Team. Grant Taylor, Colin Provost, and Mark Appleyard came by to show some aloha to the local skateboarders and kama'aina. Clint, Troy, Joe, and Martial all prepped custom screened tees for all the Blue Hawaii supporters that came by to check out the haps going on. Seems like Pearlridge Uptown has been jumpin' ever since Blue Hawaii Surf opened it's doors!

Volcom Skate Team @ Blue Hawaii Surf Ala Moana

Clint Moncata, Remy Stratton, Chris Kays, Kale Sandridge, Troy Eckert, Mark Appleyard, Grant Taylor, and Colin Provost along with the rest of the Volcom Skate fam came through our Ala Moana shop on a Friday night in early December. Being that Blue Hawaii Surf is one of the few shops that carries the Volcom Stone Age line which is a skate specific line bringing technical functionality to an already amazing Volcom product. The team came by to meet and greet the skateboarders of Hawaii as well as patrons of Blue Hawaii Surf. The boys brought their trucker hat press and let constumers chose any design of their choice and then they pressed the design right then and there! Customers were stoked, we were stoked, and the Volcom fam was stoked! Big mahalos to the Volcom fam for showing love to Blue Hawaii Surf and stopping by!

Crossroads Tradeshow

Crossroads is the anti tradeshow for skateboarders. Jamie Thomas started this show in the parking lot of Black Box Distrubution a couple of years back. He wanted all skateboarders to have access to see what was new as well to skate. This was something that the ASR wasn't having so Jamie did it himself. When skate vendors stopped attending the ASR it was only then that they found out how vital skateboarding and skateboarders were to the ASR show. I guess they ASR and Crossroads came up with an agreement and Jamie brought crossroads to the Petco Park parking lot across from the ASR. All in all it was pretty rad seeing an all skateboard tradeshow with actual skateboarders....skateboarding

Goons of Doom @ Eighty Four Skate Co. Kalihi

On December 16th 2009 Volcom and the Goons of Doom came through our Eighty Four Skate Co. / Blue Hawaii Gallery location in Kalihi for a little jam session. Ozzie Wright and all of his childhood friends who make up the band Goons of Doom rocked Kalihi for a couple of hours. The Volcom crew and friends from the North Shore made the trek form the NS to partake in the chaos. Kale Sandridge made a guest appearance and jammed with the Goons on his harmonica. Big mahalos to Volcom, Troy Eckert, Clint Moncata, Lauren Holbrook, Marty "Jinx" Jimenez, Martial Crum, Alex Gray, Ozzie Wright, and The Goons of Doom for making this a night to remember in Kalihi. Cholo's Bowl (12/19/09)

The holidays in Hawaii usually brings home Hawaii's finest. In this case we're talking about Nick Yamasato who transplanted to Long Beach a couple of years ago to pursue his engineering career. Early this December Yamasat was back in town for a little R&R. Alot of surf, some skateboarding, and hanging with the homies. On Nick's last day on the islands, Steve Ellis invited Nick and friends down for an Aloha BBQ to send Nick back off to Long Beach the right way. If you don't know the Cholo's Bowl is the best thing on the island of Oahu when it comes to skateboarding. Super big mahalos to Steve for having the Eighty Four Skate Co. over to his compound for a goodtime!

Honolulu Marathon

On December 13,2009 the Honolulu Marathon took place. Michael Zhang the owner of Blue Hawaii Surf dedicated his participation in this year's marathon to Kenny Brimer. Michael only runs once a week to prep for the marathon and pretty much the rest is pretty much whatever happens...happens. Running 26 miles normally requires a year long commitment and planning to get your body ready for an run a race of this magnitude. Michael told me that he would think about the fight that Kenny is going through with leukemia and this would keep him plenty motivated to finish the race no matter what. He predicted he'd finish in 4 and half hours and even though he cramped at the 10 mile marker and had to walk for awhile, he some how managed to finish at his targeted time he set for himself. Aside from this run Michael sent our mass emails to all his friends and business networks to make a monetary contribution to Kenny Bimer on Michael's behalf for participating in the Honolulu Marathon. Although Kenny and Michael don't know each other very well and come from different worlds it's nice to see the owner of our company who neither skates or surfs make a commitment to helping out a fellow skateboarder.

Behind the scenes @ "Boardjunkies" Exhibit

It's been a couple of weeks since we held the opening for the "Boardjunkies" exhibit. It's been even longer since the idea first came about. Mike Kays and I talked about the idea of showcasing his collection in December of 08. Nothing ever came about nor did we really talk about it until this October when Mike approached me about his annual Turkey Shootout Bowl Contest at the Hickam Hanger. I had him come check out the opening we did for "Fly This" Jeannie Chesser's artshow. Little did I know that Jeannie was down with all the local skateboarders and her show had brought about alot of the O.G.'s of skateboarding here in Hawaii. Mike liked the feel of the show and from there it was on! Because we were coming into the Thanksgiving holiday as well as Mike's bowl contest at Hickam we were forced to hold off until 3 days before the actual event on how we were going to plan this thing out. In my experience the most fun and memorable events come about on a whim with hardly any planning and most of the time very last minute. Well this was the case for "Boardjunkies" and this exhibit was both fun and memorable for all who attended and for that I am stoked!
There's alot of prep work and behind the scenes things that go on when preparing for a show or any of event. Because I'm such a procrastinator it puts alot of pressure on both myself and the friends who are helping to set up the show. I am very fortunate to have friends like Mark Kawakami amongst the many who are always down to help out on the drop of a dime. Without friends like Mark and everyone else who contributed these events wouldn't be possible. Mahalos to all of you who have contributed over the past year and half with all of our events at the Blue Hawaii Gallery / Eighty Four Skate Co. Deck the Halls @ Manifest 12/11/09

Last Friday evening after the Redbull Skate Shop Battle Kavet the Catylist held a deck artshow at Manifest. The event was put on to help raise funds for Kenny Brimer who was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Artist such as Jef Hartsel, Eukarest, Katch, Angry Woebots, Dyson Ramones, Matt Tapia, Jeremy Strength, Jason Menor, Neukon, Evil Genius, Kenny Brimer, and the list goes on and on contributed to the cause.

Red Bull Skate Shop Battle 12/11/09

On Friday December 11, 2009 Redbull along with Fitted Hawaii and APB held a shop challenge at A'ala Skate Park. Rene from Fitted designed a custom rainbow rail had it built and bolted down over the nipple at A'ala Skatepark. The winner of the best trick over this death rail won a skydiving adventure with the Red Bull team. I didn't get to see the whole contest but here are some pics of the attempts that were made. Most of them bails but nonetheless courageous. Most notable landed tricks were Lil' Daniel's smith grind and Silent John's noseblunt which eventually won the contest. Congrats to Silent John!

Analog Skate Team @ A'ala Park

Hawaii's own Mark Oblow (Analog/Gravis skate team manager) was back in town with Arto Saari, Dylan Reider, and Stefan Janowski to host a BBQ/demo @ A'ala Park for the local skateboarders. This demo however wasn't your typical demo with a bunch of groms on the sidelines waiting for a handout. Oblows roots in skateboarding run deep here in Hawaii and can be traced back to glory days of the 80's skateboard/punk rock scene. So as you would imagine alot of the elder statesmen of skateboarding showed up in full support of Oblow as well as to trade off stories and alot of catching up. Skateboarders like Jef Hartsel, Kyle Yanagimoto, Rene Mathyson, Rob Carlyon, Vince Kraus, and the list goes on showed up to partake in the festivities. The HPD was there as well in full force ready to pounce at the first sight of any adult beverages being consumed. It was ok for the drug dealers to do their deal as well as the crackheads to do what they do, but the focus for the evening was all on the skateboarders. Go figure! Anyways a goodtime was had by all. Mahalos to Nos and Oblow for the teri burgers as well as to Chad from APB for manning the grill and serving em up!

T&C Sunburn Classic

This past Saturday T&C held their annual "Sunburn Classic" @ A'ala Park. This year featured a best trick and a demo by the L.R.G. skate team. Adelmo Jr., Rodrigo Teixeira, and Jack Curtain I believe were the riders. I pretty much missed most of the contest and didn't even get to see the demo due to prior engagements. However I did get to meet up with Dyson, Darren, and Jeff to watch Marsh skate. Marsh was pretty much trying to hit a grandslam with a tre flip of the bank to bank which is pretty much impossible. Anyways we came, we saw, and we bailed. I've got to say though that the boys from Prototype were pretty much owning the contest. Don't know who they are but they killed it. Thanks to T&C for supporting the local skate scene.

I was fortunate enough to meet and skate with Andy Kessler a few years back while in San Diego. I met him through "Rockabilly Willie" Fruean. I wasn't really aware of who Andy was, all that I knew was that he was from New York. He was a super down to earth guy and fun to skate with.

This past Sunday was our 1st in a series of Blue Hawaii Surf/Skate Day with all of our homies and ohana. The skate sesh took place @ Kapolei after a day of surf @ Kalaeloa a.k.a. Barbs. We pull up to the park it was a full fledge slash demo in effect. Kyle Yanagimoto, Brian Takishita, Alf Kondo, Nick Yamasato, Dyson Ramones, Bo Ikeda, Mike Bremner as well as the local Kapolei shredders having a good time skating and bbq-ing Hawaiian style! We brought our surf team out along with our Blue Hawaii team manager "Uncle Karl" for a sesh in the amoeba! Good fun I tell you! Remember when backyard ramps were a big thing? Well if you don't then you were probably born in the 90's (just kiddin')! Back in the 80's backyard ramps were a big deal. Anybody with a backyard ramp was the shit! You could find a ton of skaters as well as the best skateboarders in the area at the local backyard ramp. Anyways here we are in 2008 and I guarantee you that you could count the number of backyard ramps here in Hawaii on 1 hand. My buddy Mark sent me these photos of a backyard mini. Good to see that the backyard ramps are still around, can't wait to skate this one!

I get a call on Friday from "Double A" saying that he wanted to put together a demo for the following week Thursday with the Hurley and Hosoi Skate Teams. It just so happens that on the following Thursday there was some kind of Skate Jam going on @ Cholo's pool on the North Shore so they wanted to hook up after and do a signing @ our Waikele store and a demo @ Dyson's home park in Mililani. Between "Double A" and I we managed to work it out in a short period. Aaron brought over Andre Genovesi and Christian Hosoi and from the Hawaii fam Dyson Ramones and Chris "Applenuts" Awong. It was a good time as usual when we get together with the Hurley crew. Big Mahalos to Aaron and the Hurley fam, Christian Hosoi, and Fundamental Distribution for making the demo and signing possible! RVCA's Northshore BBQ

This winter P.M.Tenore and the RVCA Fam came out to Hawaii to spend some time on the North Shore with family and friends and to get into some warm weather and big surf. P.M. had a BBQ one evening and was kind enough to invite the Blue Hawaii Fam out for some grinds. Little did we know that he was going to have a star studded cast on the premises. Everyone from Slater to Eddie Rothman, Mike B. Makua Rothman, Kala Alexander, to David Choe and many more were on hand. P.M. is one of the kindest and coolest cats you'll ever meet. He keeps good company around him at all times and his friends come from all walks of life. It's pretty crazy to see M.M.A. dudes, with artist, musicians, surfers, and skaters all in one place enjoying eachother's company. That would've never happened a couple of years ago, but P.M. has managed to break all barriers and this is probably why RVCA is such a successful brand. Anyway big mahalos to P.M.and his wife for their hospitality!

"Dirty Hands" @ Kalihi

A couple of weeks ago David Choe and Harry Kim were in town for the Hawaii Film Festival. Harry Kim produced the film "Dirty Hands" documenting the past 8 years of David Choe's life as an up and coming artist and the hardships he's encountered along the way. The next night after the film debuted at the Dole Cannery theatres Dave and Harry stopped into our Kalihi location for a quick minute. We invited over some of the homies to come and hang and to meet Dave and Harry as well as to shoot the sh@t over a few cold beverages. DJ Nomad was on the 1's and 2's as well as the 3's and 4's for that matter and everybody else was just having a good ol' time. Much mahalos's for all that came by that evening as well as to David Choe, Harry Kim, and Phil Pendleton for showing the love and venturing out into our neck of the woods!

T&C Sunburn Classic

This past Saturday October 4th to be exact was T&C's Annual Sunburn Classic. I'm not sure what # their on but I want to say it was their 15th annual, but then again I could be wrong! This year T&C teamed up with Dakine for their event at the Mililani Skatepark. I pulled up 3-4 hours late and they were already on the 18 and over best trick so I missed most of it. However to my surprise the park was packed. When T&C puts on an event they only do it one way....and that's large. Lot's of peeps I haven't seen in years were in attendance. The place was so packed that it was kinda hard to squeeze in and get a glimpse of any skating. All I know is that Dakine brought down Paul Machnau, Chris Haslam, Brent Atchley, and Sierra Fellers. I caught a peep of Brent and Haslam sessioning the bowl but that was about it.Overall it seemed to be a successful event for T&C and definitely a treat for the local skateboarding community. Big ups to T&C for supporting Hawaii's skateboard scene and keeping us all entertained this past Saturday! Aloha

Beers, BBQ's, and Good Friends on the mainland

Recently we took a trip to L.A. and S.D. for some surf, BBQ, and fun and that's exactly what we did. There was a mass amount of BBQ'ing that went on as well as cold beverages to keep us cool in the hot California sun. Every day it was something new and it always topped what went on the day before. By the end of the trip Parks and I were tapping out and ready to go home. It was a great trip overall but it's good to be back home after a long stay on the mainland. Enjoy the pics!

Eric from RVCA took the crew and I out to lunch over @ Wahoo's in Costa Mesa. From my understanding this is one of the original Wahoo's. It's got a different feel from all the new Wahoo joints. It's much more authentic and not so homogenized like the new setups. Anyways the food was great as well as the atmoshpere. Thanks to Eric and Pat at RVCA for lunch!

The guys over at Fox Racing invited us over to their facility to check it out. It was super sick with a mini bike track, BBQ grills, a half pipe, and a showroom to host fashionshows. Being a fan of motocross racing it was awesome to see the history of Fox with photos from back in the 70's to the present. Fox is the king when it comes to moto and they're taking that same approach and applying it to the Action Sports industry. With James "Bubba" Stewart and recently retired Ricky Carmichael leading the way Fox is a force to be recogned with. Thanks to Kurt and Jimmy O for the tour and the hook ups!

On our way down to San Diego from Orange County we stopped over at Jamie Thomas's facility for the Black Box Openhouse. Jamie had a few other vendors like Brixton, Black Label, Given Skateboards(Markovich's new project), Deathwish, Transworld, Deluxe, Skate Book(Ballard and Salman Agah), and a few other vendors who decided not to do the ASR. Jamie's facility is incredible. He's got a full blown skatepark built in for crying out loud! Although it was hot as f#ck it was good to see old friends and make new ones. Ballard and Salman were giving out free Skate Books. These things make great coffee table books and have alot of interesting content inside from skateboarding to art. Brixton was looking good as usual with their ever expanding line. They're adding apparel to their already inasane hat line. Be on the lookout for Dyson's new ad with Brixton! After a few hours in the hot sun we decided to head on down to Tamarak and take advantage of Eric from RVCA's invite to use his beach house and boards. Water was warm....amazing! Thanks Eric!

After going to Black Box's openhouse and surfing Tamarak we headed over to legendary skateboarder Matt Hensley's Pub to celebrate Black Label's 20 years of skateboarding. Hensley's house band provided the music and Lucero and the Label Crew hosted all comers. It was awesome! Hensley's Pub has a great atmosphere and is very inviting. There were 3 or 4 Pool tables, with a collection of vintage skateboards, artwork, photography, a place for music, great food, drinks and friends. Matt's staff showed us much Aloha and we'll definitely be returning on our next trip and I highly suggest if you're in the Carlsbad area that you do the same.

Every day after the tradeshow Hurley and the Tin Fish across the street from the tradeshow were serving complimentary coldies. After a long day of walking and talking nothing was better than a nice cold beverage to relax with. It was also good way to get primed and get the night started traditional tradeshow style. You know us Hawaiians, never one to turn down a cold one or pupus!

On Thursday night Converse was hosting Social Distrtion and Reverend Horton Heat at the House of Blues San Diego. It was an acoustic set which made it uniquely rad if that makes any sense. The Reverend killed it!!! Social D also killed it and we were super stoked to have had the opportunity to be invited. Thanks to Dave Huang over at Converse for the hookups!

On Friday, Santa Cruz Skateboards was celebrating their 35th birthday upstairs in the SD Convention Center. It was super rad to see the excitement surrounding the landmark event. What was even radder was seeing the crowd of all ages, a diverse demographic, and all the big name pros who were just fanning out on the whole thing. Santa Cruz had all their riders from past to present participating in the autograph session. Their was memorabilia to be bought and signed for all the fans. Jim Phillips was easily the main attraction. Having brought us the "Screaming Hand" the most notable of his endless works, we all have Jim Phillips to thank for where we are today as skateboarders and artist.

On Saturday night Vans treated us and a few of their other accounts out to dinner at a sushi joint somewhere in downtown San Diego. On Saturday we bailed from San Diego at the crack of dawn to make it up to L.A. to check out the Dodgers vs. Diamond Backs game at Chavez Ravine. I've never been to Dodger Stadium and being an S.F. Giants fan I wasn't sure if I'd like it much. To my surprise I actually enjoyed the Dodger experience although I was rooting for the D Backs. Dodger Dogs were tasty, fans were awesome, got to see "Man Ram" belt a 3 run homer, and we had seats in the shade. What more could we ask for. Go Giants!

On our last night in Orange County before we headed out the next day we held our ritualistic BBQ that we had every night that we stayed at Nick's. Good food, good drinks, good music, and good friends, what a life. I did manage to piss Parks off during a game of trumps. He was trying to explain how to play the game since I'm not much into cards and I was a bit out of it after a long day of driving from S.D. to L.A., a Dodger game, a trip to Amoeba Records on Hollywood and back down to the O.C. It was funny because there was no getting through to me that night and that pissed Parks off. After a scrapped game of trumps Dyson, Nick, Braxton, Sean and I got out the instruments and a full blown musical session ensued!

On our last day in the O.C. we woke up early for a surf at River Jetties in Newport. It was nice and cold and all Parks and I had were a pair of boardshorts and one half mill top to share between us (check out our Water Logged for pics). There were a couple hundred guys out in full suits and we show up in boardies! Anyways it was fun. After the session we headed back to Nick's casa for some breakfast. Dyson whipped up the most amazing breakfast ever. Thanks Dice. After a good surf sesh and some breakfast it was time to head back home to the islands so Parks could check on his car! Thanks to all that made our trip a great one (Nick and Charlie, Eric Thomas, Matt Hensley and John Lucero, Dave Huang, the crew over at Volcom, RVCA, Hurley, and Vans.) Aloha!

I just made a trip up to San Francisco not too long ago..

It's a really fun city for those of you that haven't been there. Once we crossed the bridge into the city I was super stoked just because I have never been there and I love to travel to new places.

We wandered the streets for a little while and took in the city life.

We ended up at the Fisherman's Wharf near ALCATRAZ! That was definitely a sight to see just knowing the history of the Island.. And that some crazy's tried to escape from there. We also some some lazy seals soakin up some sun.

I found this sweet Hubba on our walk and pulled an epic grind brah!

After all that shredding it was time we called it a night. The next day we decided to go to the Golden Gate Bridge. That damn thing is amazing! Maybe just because I have the engineering eye already but it was so crazy to see the size of that thing and how it actually holds up. I could've sat there the whole day.

But soon we were off to explore more of the city. Namely, Haight and Ashbury. Everyone that knew I was going to SF told me to go here so I had to and I'm glad I did. Its a street full of cool little shops and random people. The vibe there was pretty rad and the food didn't disappoint.

That night our friend Dan took us out to a local bar called the 500 club. I guess its a bar that all the skate rats hang out at and he was right. I was stoked I got to hook up with Justin there. I haven't seen him for a while. I also got to meet one of my favorite skateboarders of all time, Dan Drehobl. He was such a grumpy old man it was great! We ended the night with beers and birds.

Finally it was time to wrap up the trip. We stayed at our friend Brando's house the last night. He lives in Berkeley and had a rad condo that over looked one of the main streets to UC Berkeley. This definitely called for beer and heckling. So thus I commenced!

I actually did get some skateboarding done this trip but Dan hasn't sent me the photo's yet so I have no proof of it. But I'll post em as soon as I get em..

Day 3 Pro Tec Pool Party finally!

After K1 racing we headed on over to Long Beach to the Red Room for a few coldies with the crew from Florida and Alabama. The Red Room is the local corner bar where you can always find local skateboarders and hipsters alike lurkin' and loungin. Goodtimes!

This was our host for the entire trip Pete Dericks as well as the events coordinator and janitor for Vans. Thanks Pete for the hospitality.
